Canada’s lack of anti-drone gear leads to drug epidemic in prisons

According to information from a report by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), there are nearly 100 cases of drones delivering drugs, weapons, mobile phones and other contraband to inmates at one Ontario prison alone in 2022. According to the CSC’s summary, between Jan. 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2022, there were approximately 600 drug-related cases and 250 weapons seizures at Collins Bay. Most of the contraband is brought into the institution via drones. This trend has raised concerns among Canadian prison authorities and correctional officers’ unions.

One challenge to installing anti-drone measures in prisons is the rapid development of drone technology and the length of time it can take to procure, install and test these systems in Canadian prisons, giving offenders time to come up with creative solutions. In the meantime, some facilities simply do not have the budget or financial support needed to install such systems.
